Goat is a kind of insurance against crop failure for socio-economically weaker sections of rural society and provides an alternate source of livelihood to small, marginal and landless farmers all year round. But unless done scientifically it is not much profitable. To increase the income of marginalized and asset less goat rearing women through scientific goat rearing practices and collective bargaining power, Savitribai Phule Goat Farming Producer Company Ltd. was established by Yuva Mitra with the financial support from NABARD. The company was incorporated on 6th May 2016 having CIN ‘U01100MH2016PTC280760’. This is the wholly women-owned and one of a kind enterprise having 2000 members and 688 shareholders. The company is currently operating in Sinnar block of Nashik district and having the largest inventory of nearly 15000 goats in its portfolio.
The major breeds in the portfolio are Osmanabadi and Sangamneri. The company aims to empower its member goat rearers by providing backend services such as training and capacity building, veterinary services, insurance services and market linkage through weight based goat marketing, goat milk marketing and manure selling.
The objective of the company is to enable marginalized and disadvantage women having no productive assets, to undertake goat farming business with commercial approach through adequate knowledge dissemination, awareness generation and through intervention of affordable technology in goat farming along with adopting sophisticated marketing activities to provide fair market linkages to members and branding of products like milk and milk products, meat, manure, skin products etc.
